NMAG – Northampton Museum and Art Gallery

Envision, working in conjunction with Blueprint BSS, completed the design for the refurbishment and extension of Northampton Museum and Art Gallery.

Northamptonshire is regarded by many to be the home of British shoe making. The Northampton Museum and Art Gallery cares for a world-leading collection of objects charting the history of shoes, designated as being of both national and international significance. The museum’s popularity now requires a programme of refurbishment and expansion.

Envision has employed a number of cutting edge techniques on the project. The design utilises 3D Revit software to ensure the detailed coordination with the existing building, enabling the incorporation of services to a new café and gallery space.

Working within the restrictions of a limited budget, the design strategy reuses existing equipment as far as possible, requiring detailed surveys and plant assessments to be undertaken.

Envision’s design included close control elements for a new Temporary Exhibition Gallery and a Shoe Gallery.

Envision also undertook Dynamic Simulation Modelling at the early stages to show how a highly glazed new build element could reduce solar gains to the satisfaction of the Building Control Officer. The museum is currently closed to the public, and is expected to reopen towards the end of 2019. Envision looks forward to an ongoing role on the project.
