Environmental management during construction is a key aspect in delivering sustainable buildings.
Good environmental practices can promote the image of construction, both for the contractor and developer. It can avoid risks and potential costly penalties of non-compliance and help promote better outcomes, for example through responsible sourcing and supply chain management. Having procedures and practices in place, and monitoring these during construction is recognised and rewarded through processes such as BREEAM. Having systems in place can also help contractors secure work.
Whilst many larger contractors have successful internalised environmental management, many of the smaller scale projects cannot justify a site–based resource, dedicated to monitor environmental practices and ensure ongoing compliance.
