Sam Wallis from Envision gave a well-received presentation to 3D Reid Architects on delivering low carbon homes.
The presentation focused on the technical and market requirements necessary to deliver low carbon homes, comparing a ‘compliance-based’ model and a ‘performance-based’ approach.
Sam Wallis, Senior Sustainability and Energy Consultant at Envision says…
“The industry is geared up to a compliance based approach, however this can lead to a ‘one size fits all’ design and is likely to significantly underestimate the extent of emission associated with the residential sector. Unfortunately both UK Building Regulations and planning policies are underpinned by compliance methods. A better approach is to adopt performance-based analysis, making use of more innovative methods of life cycle assessment, whole life energy modelling and soft landings to better inform our building design”.
